How to brew French press
French press gives you a rich, full-bodied cup because nothing filters out the natural oils. Coarse grind is the key, so pressing stays easy and the cup stays clean.
Need a different amount? The brew lab does the math.
What you need
- French press
- Coarse ground coffee
- Kettle
- Tablespoon
- Spoon for stirring
Making more or less? Work out your amounts in the brew lab.
Steps
-
Heat the water
Bring water to a boil, then let it rest 30 seconds. Meanwhile add 1 level tablespoon of Coarse ground coffee per 6 oz of water to the press.
0:30 -
Bloom
Pour in just enough water to wet the grounds and give it a gentle stir.
0:30 -
Steep
Add the rest of the water, set the lid on with the plunger up and let it steep.
4:00 -
Press and pour
Press the plunger down slowly and steadily, then pour every cup right away. Coffee left on the grounds keeps brewing and turns bitter.
Tips
- Pressing feels hard? The grind is too fine. Coarse is made for this.
- Pour leftovers into a carafe instead of leaving them in the press.
- A little sediment in the last sip is normal. Leave it in the cup.
