How to brew drip coffee
Your drip machine can make a really good cup. It just needs the right grind, the right amount of coffee and fresh water. Here is how we do it at home.
Want a different batch size? The brew lab works out the coffee for any amount of water.
What you need
- Drip coffee maker
- Paper filter
- Medium ground coffee
- Tablespoon
- Fresh, cold water
Making more or less? Work out your amounts in the brew lab.
Steps
-
Measure the coffee
Add 1 level tablespoon of Medium ground coffee per 6 oz of water to the filter. Like it bolder? Use 1½.
-
Add the water
Fill the reservoir with fresh, cold water. Filtered water tastes cleaner if your tap water is hard.
-
Brew
Start the machine. Most finish in about 4 to 6 minutes.
-
Pour it fresh
Pour it while it is fresh. Coffee left on a hot plate turns bitter, so move extra to a thermal carafe.
Tips
- Taste paper? Rinse the filter with hot water before adding coffee.
- Descale the machine about once a month so it brews hot and even.
- Keep coffee airtight, away from light and heat.
